Who We Are

The focus of SG Psych Stuff is to educate and inform people who are interested in psychology and/or wish to pursue a career in psychology, i.e. to be a psychologist, counsellor, social worker, or any other related career, in Singapore and surrounding countries in Southeast Asia.

To allow everyone to have a clearer idea of what SG Psych Stuff is doing, we thought it would be better to have a mission statement:

  • To provide the most updated and accurate information about the psychology industry in Singapore.

This is in line with our tagline:

“For a better future in Psychology for you.”

Meet the Team

From 2011 to 2015, SG Psych Stuff was managed solely by Carlin (introduction below). From 2015, the team has been expanding and as of 2020, we currently have 8 members in the main team. Find out more about them below.

Carlin
CarlinPresident

“It is always about the next generation.”
This is what I will say if someone asks me “Why do you have to do so much for the Singapore psychological scene?”

I started SG Psych Stuff in 2011, hoping to improve psychology in Singapore and assist students, like yourself, in your journeys in psychology. From a 1-man team in 2011, we have flourished to having different SG Psych Stuff team members overseeing different functions. They will be introducing themselves below.

I do hope to see more recognition of all psychologists as a professional in Singapore, and not restricted only to the common understanding of clinical psychologists and psychiatrists. Other than mandatory regulation of psychologists, I also hope to see accreditation of psychology programs in Singapore. Accreditation of programs is something I really look forward to, and truly believe that it will benefit more students in the long run.

Hello there, I’m Khai Teng! I graduated with a psychology degree from the National University of Singapore in 2022 and I currently work in a hospital, where I develop and strengthen partnerships to support population health initiatives in the community.

I started off my journey as a mentee in SG Psych Stuff and this has helped me to understand more about the various fields field and my interests. More importantly, I am grateful to have met and networked with incredible individuals in this space. In the same way that SG Psych Stuff has shone light in my personal and career development, I hope to drive this society and develop more ways benefit more students, helping them discover more about their career pathways.

In my free time, I enjoy photography and running. I also run my mental health wellness page – @calmseeds 🥰, where I share lighthearted mental health tips with people, through hand-drawn artwork to encourage and support individuals.

Jerry
JerryDirector of Career Advisory

I’m Jerry and my training is in Counselling and Psychotherapy. I graduated with a Masters degree in Counselling from Monash University (Australia) in 2010 and a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from the University of Southern Queensland (Australia) in 2005.

My professional background is diverse and cross-functional, encompassing expertise as an educator, psychologist, counsellor and youth worker. With over ten years of experience working with youths and young adults, I specialize in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Person Centered Therapy, Mindfulness approaches, Motivational Interviewing (MI), and Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT).

Throughout my career, I have worked in a wide range of settings, including one-to-one and group therapy sessions, classroom lessons with Normal (Academic and Technical) stream students in secondary schools, polytechnic students, and motivational workshops. I also regularly give talks on at-risk youth and mental health to adults and professionals. Additionally, I am a full-time Psychology lecturer and counsellor, as well as a volunteer Defence Psychologist with MINDEF and Victim Care Officer with SPF.

As a psychologist in Singapore, I believe that the term should encompass a broad range of professionals from different fields, such as organisational, counselling, forensic psychology, and education. My hope is to promote inclusivity in the recognition of psychologists from these fields, rather than solely focusing on clinical psychologists.

Brenda
BrendaDirector of Strategic Engagements

I graduated from UCL Institute of Education in MSc Psychology of Education in 2013. I have worked in social service sector before in helping cancer patients and family who are in need. Trust me, networking is greatly needed in this sector so you know exactly where you can seek help from for the families. Currently I am working in the education sector, mainly with students who have learning disabilities or special education.

As for myself, I love travelling and to experience different cultures. I also do art and craft and music during my leisure time. I am a great listener to my friends when they need someone to listen to them.

I hope Singapore could provide more opportunities for fresh graduates to have practical experience, rather than only filling us with theoretical concepts. A more inclusive environment for them would be of great opportunity to grow professionals (well, of course, with proper guidance and certifications).

Masturah Shafaq
Masturah ShafaqDirector of Outreach

I have been in the early childhood industry for more than ten years as a teacher, senior teacher and a curriculum specialist. I am passionate about working with children and their families. On top of my Masters in Education (Curriculum and Teaching), I am currently completing my Bachelor’s Degree in Psychological Science. I hope to still work with children and families as I move from the education industry to health/social industry. As part of the outreach team, I strive to outreach and bridge what is ‘perceived’ by undergraduates especially and what is health/social industry is ‘actually’ is. I really look forward to networking with you!

Sheila Chai
Sheila ChaiDirector of Social Media

Hello, I’m Sheila, someone who constantly seeks growth in every sense. Even after doing four years of undergraduate studies in Psychology, I still can’t have enough of school – so currently, I am pursuing a Master’s in Counselling!

Career wise, I found my passion in the past few years to be journeying with children and youth through difficult times and on their growth journey. I believe in the potential of youths if given sufficient care, guidance and fun. As such, my day job revolves around supporting students with their basic mental health needs at a university, while on the side, I manage and empower youths to serve meaningfully for a social service agency! I also volunteer as a mentor for youths with mental health issues and as a listening ear for youth helplines!

Personally, I hope for more relevant opportunities to be provided for psych undergraduates here regardless of the institutions they go to – be it in terms of mentorships, internships or volunteering. I believe there are many who are passionate, and they can shine with the proper chance and directions! That’s partly why we launch our Telegram community!
